After reading my blog, a friend sent me this photo of yerba mate energy shots that he found at a convenience store in the San Francisco bay area. He wrote, "I tried the Yerba Mate energy shot. Not very good, but I could taste the mate in it. The flavor I tried was lime tangerine, and the strongest flavor was lime."
People frequently drink yerba mate at the office.
Electric kettles that heat the water to the perfect temperature can be purchased in Argentina. The kettle has a thermometer so you can program it to heat the water to an exact temperature. My friends said 80 is the perfect temperature. Argentines are adamant that the water should not be boiling because they say that boiling water burns the yerba.
At a stall in La Rural (Buenos Aires’s large agricultural fair) the Instituto Nacional de la Yerba Mate (INYM) promoted the use of a coffeemaker as the “modern” way to brew mate cocido. INYM brewed mate cocido by putting loose yerba mate in a coffeemaker. There was a long line for the cups of mate cocido that INYM gave away. Although there were relatively few yerba mate stalls at La Rural, the beverage is a key part of rural life in Argentina. |
