About Julia Sarreal and this Blog
I am a professor at Arizona State University, a wife, and a mother of two young boys. As an academic, I am privileged to both teach undergraduate students and pursue my research interests. My first book, The Guaraní and Their Missions: A Socioeconomic History, is about the daily life and experiences of the Guarani Indians of the Río de la Plata region of South America who lived in Jesuit missions (1609-1810). I first became interested in the Guaraní missions when my husband and I were Peace Corps volunteers in Curuguaty, Paraguay (1998-2000) and continued to research the subject during graduate studies at Harvard University (2001-2009). My new research project is about yerba mate.
As a historian of Latin America, I have had the opportunity to travel and live in South America. My husband and I prioritize exposing our kids to other cultures and have found ways for me bring our kids on most of my research trips. Our two boys and I have spent two summers in Buenos Aires and a summer in Spain – the first of which was when B was less than two years old! We have found these experiences incredibly enriching.
My family and I will be living in Argentina for a year in 2015-2016 while I have a sabbatical from teaching at Arizona State University. I have taken this opportunity to create a blog to share our experiences.
